OSMSmart aims to revolutionise crowdsourced mapping of accessible wheelchair routes. Current crowdsourcing approaches require users to submit detailed information and images of navigational issues manually which is both technical and time-consuming. OSMSmart will automatically collect data about routes taken, terrain and obstructions using smartphone sensors. ‘Smart’ machine-learning algorithms will then process the data uploading it automatically to a navigation layer on OpenStreetMap (OSM) and providing automatic route selection and navigation for wheelchair users.
We are currently prototyping the app in Edinburgh with Blackwood Foundation, OpenStreetMap France (OSM-Fr), opensensors.io and the Open University.
